Gladiator dani salleh 1204573

1. Is the story a hero's journey? Try to describe it as a hero's journey and see if it fits the template.

The hero, the person that goes out to do great deed, achieves something on be half of the Group, tribe or civilization. That describes the adventure of the heroes journey.

2. What did you learn about Rome from this movie? Do some research on the characters. Are they real people from history? Is the film accurate in historical detail? And architectural detail (for example, the Colosseum/ Flavian Ampitheatre)?

Based on the research that i made, not everything in the movie was accurate. People call it the worse and the best of all film .

Characters

Some of the character in the film gladiator movie was real and some were made up, and others were real but the situation of the film made the character change on how they were protrade and most of them are protrade differently.

example of the character that were real.protrade differently

  • Maximus Decimus Meridius Decimus Aelius Maximus Meridiusw is his real name but Maximus is mentioned as Maximus Decimus Meridius and later as Aelius Maximus.
  • Lucilla was murdered on her brother's orders at the beginning of his reign. There is no indication that he intended to commit incest with her.
  • Commodus' only nephew by Lucilla, if called Lucius Verus like his father, actually died young even before his uncle becoming an Emperor. Since Lucilla's husband, Lucius Verus died in 169 and Commodus became Emperor in 181, Lucilla's son by her dead husband would be at least 12 years old at the beginning of Commodus' reign and already 23 at the end in 192. The film shortens the actual reign of Commodus.
  • Lucius Verus The young son of Lucilla. He is named after his father Lucius Verus. He is also the grandson of Marcus Aurelius

  • During my research there's a few character that didn't pop . So i assume that the character were made up,

  • Antonius Proximo - The person who bought Maximus in north africa. A former gladiator himself, he was freed by Marcus Aurelius
  • Senator Gracchus - One of the senators who opposes Commodus' rule.
  • Maximus wife and son.

Architectural detail.

  • In the scene with the gladiator caravan coming into Rome, a wall that surrounds the entire city can be seen, which resembles the Aurelian Wall. The Aurelian Wall was not made until 275 A.D.
  • In the film it is stated that the Colosseum holds 50,000 people. It is now believed to have seated 73,000.
  • In the movie, the Colosseum is referred to by that name; in truth during the Roman Empire it was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre

3. What was happening to the Roman empire during the period of Commodus' rule? And what eventually caused the decline and downfall of the Roman Empire?

Commodu's rule from 180 to 192 . He also ruled as co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until his father's death in 180 .There was a lot of conspiracy that was going around. and there for coaused the decline and downfall of the roman empire along the year. but some say the Roman empire never fall rather adapted. Since the Rome still exists . Many say the fall of rome was on going process and it lasted over mroe then a century long.

4. Is this film propaganda for a certain set of ideas or a way of life? Did the writer, director and actors intend for you to have the reactions that you have expressed here? Aren't you just a bit suspicious and critical of the film and the black and white division between Commodus and Maximus? Such a bad and nasty Emperor and such a loyal gladiator! One is a 'good Roman' and the other is just out for himself? Doesn't it all seem a little too simple? So, again, is this film propaganda for an idea of loyalty? To answer this, look at which country produced it and when it was produced. How is the film 'constructed' to provide a lesson to the audiences of that country of its origin? Is it really about Rome, or about the country it came from? What was happening in that country in the years just before it was created?

United State produce this flim. It didnt state when it was produce but it did state when it was released on  May 5, 2000.  why do people think that commodus is the bad one and maximus is the good one.? because that's what the director wants  you to think. during that time Kennedy was the US president and when he was detrone Gorge w.bush went up. could it be this is what they want to make people think about? because certainly this gladiator movie isn't really about rome. The US made this movie, maybe the US wants to think that US is rome? the great empire . This flim is based on propaganda as it want to influence the attitude of the community towards the flim. maybe the US wants us to believe that the emperor or the president now is a bad president and it need a new change. that is how i look at it when i saw the movie.

The scene i like the most in the gladiator movie is when Maximus realizes the truth about marcus's death and how he was betrayed by his friend. When he escape he rush to his family only to find out that the house was already burn down and his family was already killed . then he became a slave but no one knew his identity. He was bought by by proximo and was force to fight as a gladiator for his life.. at first he didnt want to but he found out who was the trator he fought to the very end until he was face to face with the fake king (forgot his name).
