Borobudur

What is Borobudur?
Borobudur is a temple considered as one of the seven wonders of the world. This temple is located at Borobudur District, South of Magelang, Central Java.Borobudur was built by Sanmaratungga in the 8th century, and belongs to Buddha Mahayana. The temple was found in ruined condition and was buried. The overall height was 42 meters, but was only 34.5 meters after restoration, and had the dimension of 123 x 123 meters (15,129 square meters). There were 10 floors. The first floor up to the sixth floor was square form, the seventh to the tenth floor were round form. Total size of the temple walls was 2500 square meters, full of relief. The total number of panels with relief was 1212. The total number of Buddha statue was 504.

What will I see from highest and lowest of Borobudur structure?
From the highest view you can look like Borobudur as “a big lotus flower bud ready to bloom” which was “floating” on a lake. You also can imagination was that from the air, the Borobudur Temple looks floating. Borobudur area was one time a big lake. Most of the villages around Borobudur Temple were at the same altitude, 235 meters above the sea-level. The same altitude included the Pawon and Mendut temples. Thus the area under 235 meter altitude was below the lake water level.

What is (stupa) sculpture? Why?
Structure of stupa (conical form) with double expression. As a whole, the Borobudur Temple was an open-flat stupa, but on the other hand, the temple expressed the idea of a “closed world”. The latter expression could be felt when one is already inside the temple. Whenever person is inside the temple, his or her view will be limited to high walls full on relieves, the verandah is always squared in such a way that one could not see other parts of the temple, even in a same floor. The same feeling happened if one stood on arupadhatu round platform, he or she will have a wider view only on that level, but are not able to see the lower level nor the upper level like the one on arupadhatu and kamandhatu. It could be said that Borobudur is a symbol of cosmic mountain covered by the sky roof, a specific world that could be reached through isolated alleys as stages.

RUPADHATU :man enlighten by the meaning of life, to sacrifice one self for others
KAMADATU :realm of desire represents the state of man before acquired knowledge of        morality before the teaching of Buddha.
ARUPADATU : Realm of formlessness in this world of the invisible and the highest to the 3 upper terrances of the monument.

From my opinion, the Borobudur is the more special temple in the world, the temple can see from top is look like a ' lotus ' it may mean that there is a clear and clean place. Clear and clean means that inside the temple u will be a human that without any bad think in your mind, you will be thinking the positive mind think for your heart and your brain.i can feel that the temple is how holy and how beautiful and special in the world. Borobudur also is a temple that is for everyone can go visit din count you are  as a Buddhist or a non-Buddhist, it is a temple that is for every culture.

What is Borobudur?
Borobudur is a nith-century Buddhist temple in Indonesia. The monument has six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. Decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues and a main dome on the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues inside perforated stupa.

What is happening in Borobudur?
Borobudur was abandoned following the fourteenth century decline of Buddhist kingdoms and the Javanese conversion to Islam. Borobudur has no record of who built Borobudur or its actual purpose. Borobudur was hidden for centuries under volcanic ash and jungle growth. It is built as a single large stupa, and when viewed from above takes the form of a giant tantric Buddhist mandala.

What will I see from highest and lowest of Borobudur structure?
Top of the structure will found the central stupa (signifying Buddha's enlightenment), and it is a symbol of eternity. There's nonthing in it and its also represents Nirvana. There is 72 bell-shaped smaller stupas encircling the central stupa, depicting as the spiritual world.

Lowest structure of Borobudur represent Kamadhatu (the world of desire), and is decorated with 160 reliefs shown ugly scenes of human desire and their karmic consequences. The illustrations are to motivate the pilgrim to escape their earthly shackles for Nirvana.

What is (stupa) sculpture? Why?
Stupa is a symbol of enlightenment and is one of the most ancient icons of Buddhist art. Stupas is the oldest and most prevalent forms of Buddhist architecture. These holy monuments were designed with deep symbolism and sacred geometry. Filled with Buddhist relics, and other holy objects, stupas emanate blessings and peace.
There was three level of Borobudur stupa, the based level was Kamadhatu, the second level was Rupadhatu, while the highest level was Arupadhatu.

Kamadhatu is the 'world of desire',whom  people live in this level was hero that haven start their journey. Indeed, it also described as "cave" which prison the slaves. These salves is being fooled and also scared of "death", and suffer on the chain of death before they aware the truth.Rupadhatu is the "world of forms", where in this level, they had lost because they was desired of the illusion that being created. They also relief that it was no "death" in the reality. Thus, they must facing the test and "death", so they revived and relief from the chain. Arupadhatu is the "world of formlessness", which the world for people who already revived and relief from the chain. People whom in this level was the hero who will lead others form the world of desire to this level. They definitely not facing the fearing of death, because they was relief from the chain of death.

Borobudur Temple is one of the greatest monument in the world. It is the biggest Buddha temple in 9th century.Borobudur is located at a high place, people need to go there by climbing the stairs. Besides that, Borobudur consist of 6 levels of square shape at the bottom, while 3 levels on top are circle shape, and the highest level is the Buddhist stupa which facing toward west.

Each level represent the stages of human life. The base level of the Borobudur, call Kamadhatu, this level illustrating the human behavior of desire, the reliefs depict robbing, killing, rape, torture and defamation.
Follow by the four square levels, call Rapadhatu, have a great deal of purely ornate reliefs.

Next, is the three circular levels, call Arupadhatu, which represent the Buddhist three-part division of the universe. The lower level is the sphere of desire, where the human spirit is chained to greed. The middle level is the sphere of form, where the human spirit is free from greed but is nit yet able to transcend the material world. The upper level is the sphere of formlessness, where the liberated human spirit has left earthly consideration behind. The highest level is an inverted bell shape and contain sculptures of Buddha.

In my opinion, people who went there before were aimed to aware about their life. If there is a chance for me alive at there, I will go through every levels and every single part of the Borobudur. I will try to relate every single part of it to my life. It may make sense and give a chance for me to understand more about their culture. If I stand at the top, the highest part of the Borobudur, what can I see? I think the first thing i can see is the further part away from the Borobudur, which can represent the world outside of Borobudur, there are a lot of knowledge which we can't learn if we did not go there and experience. Then, I will continue to observe the level i can see on Borobudur, which I actually can see it from different angles and find out what is the problems. This is same theory in our life, we must not always observe it by keep continue looking on the the details, however we need to stand away to look at it sometimes.

The first 6 terraces are in square form and the 3 upper terraces are in circle form. there has a big Buddha status located at the top terrace and facing westward. Each terrace symbolizes the stage of human life. In the line with of Buddha Mahayana, anyone who intends to reach the level of Buddha's must go through each of those life stages. Each terrace has beautiful relief panels showing how skillful the sculptors were. In order to understand the sequence of the stories on the relief panels, visiter should walk clockwise from the entrance of the temple. The relief panels tell the legendary story of Ramayana. There are 3 level which are Kamadhatu, Radhadatu and Arupadhatu. what i can see from the picture is a level of th eflowers layer by layer. which represent kamadhatu, ramadhatu and arupadhatu.
actually borobudur building is describing the Buddha journey in pursuit of perfection. this temple is a kind of book that can be written as a source of knowledge for everyone who willing to learn about the philosophy of Buddhism. Ten levels of the temple is describe as ten bodhisattva levels must be traversed to reach the perfection of the Buddha. The fourth side of the temple there is a gate and ladder is just like a Pyramid. it brings a philosophy that all life came from stone. stone turn to become a sand.then turn to be plants and then insects then wild animals and then finally be human. this process is call hero journey.

what is the monomyth?

what is the monomyth?

The heroic monomyth (also known as the Hero's Journey) describes the common stages of a hero's journey found in many stories.

Stage 1: Departure

Call to Adventure:

The hero's journey begins when the hero becomes aware of the world outside his home or town where he/she has lived for his entire life. His journey is usually given to him by a herald who helps the hero by acting as a guide.

Refusal of the Call:

The hero may actually refuse the initial call to adventure, usually from their fear of change. The hero will eventually go on his journey, either from "encouragement" by a supernatural force or by an event that almost forces the hero to move beyond his home.

Supernatural Aid:

As the hero travels on his journey, he may meet with an old man, a god/goddess or a messenger who gives the hero a weapon or some magical powers.

Crossing the First Threshold:

This "threshold" the hero must cross is what separates the hero from the comforts of his home to the adventurous new world filled with mystery and danger. Sometimes the threshold is guarded by a gatekeeper whom the hero must defeat.

Belly of the Whale:

As the hero crosses the threshold, he finds himself alone in the darkness of new world. In the darkness, the hero may find his purpose to go on the journey and can emerge from the "belly of the whale" as a new person.

Stage 2 : Initiation

The Road of Trials:

The road is a series of tests, and tasks that hero must undergo to begin the transformation. The hero often fails one or more of these tests, which often occur in three.

The Meeting With the Goddess:
This is when the hero experience a love that have power, all encompassing, unconditional love.It is a very important step in the process and is often represented by the hero finding the other person that hero loves most completely.

Woman as Temptress:
For this step, hero faces temptations, a physical or pleasurable nature, that may lead to abandon from hero quest, which not necessarily have to be a woman. Woman is a metaphor for the physical or material temptations of life, since the hero-knight was often tempted by lust from spiritual journey.

Atonement with the Father:
This step hero have to be confront by whatever holds the ultimate power in hero life. In myths, the father or a father figure who has life and death power. This is already the center point of the journey.Which all the previous steps been moved in this place, and all that follow will moved out from it.

Apotheosis:
When someone dies a physical death, or dies to the self to live in spirit, hero moves to a state of divine knowledge, love, compassion and bliss. This step is a period of rest, peace and fulfillment before the hero begins the return.

The Ultimate Boon:
Ultimate boon is an achievement goal of the quest. It is what the hero went into the journey to get.

How is the Matrix fits monomyth and the Plato's allegory of the caves?

How is the Matrix fits monomyth and the Plato's allegory of the caves?
There were three stages, which is (departure), (initiation) and (return).

In first stage of departure, A computer programmer is a secretly hacker kown as "Neo". A female hacker named Trinity confirm that the  man named Morpheus can help him.Undeterred, Neo met with Morpheus and agreed to follow him by swallowing an offered red pill. Neo as abruptly awakes in a liquid-filled vessel, connected with thousands of  peoples to an elaborate electrical structure.

Second stage of initiation, agents drug and interrogate Morpheus attempt to learn his access codes to the mainframe computer, the humans' subterranean refuge in the real world. Morpheus and Trinity use a telephone to exit the Matrix, but Neo is ambushed. He stands his ground and defeats Smith, and flees when the Agent possesses another body. Just before reaching another exit, Neo is shot and killed by Agent Smith.

Third stage of return, with Neo back in the Matrix, dialing a phone call promising that he will demonstrate to the people imprisoned in the Matrix that "anything is possible." He hang the phone and flies into the sky.

In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the shadows reflected on the wall and believed the shadows are real objects .
In Matrix, people lived in unreal world and carrying out their daily activities as usual which they believe is reality. Both the Matrix and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave had showed the innocence of humankind and the unwillingness to accept the truth behind the “reality” that they believed.

HOw matrix relate with PLAto and monomyth

Plato Cave In Matrix
Matrix and Plato are similar but they are telling different event of the story which happens through these people life. Neo is the prisoner in the cave that could not move. He was shaded from the real world, and have no idea that which is the real world.
The shadows in Plato caves represented the dream he was in, because he always thought that dream was the real world to him, until he was exposed to the REAL world as same as the concept in the Plato, The people in the cave thought the shadows were the real world, when there was something else.
*Shadow in matrix mean that it is a world that blinds you from the truth. no one knows what is the matrix is.
Shadow in matrix started is after Neo decided to choose the red pil.

How Monomyth in Matrix and Plato in Cave.
There are 3 steps happen in Matrix departure, initiation and return.
DEPARTURE=~ Neo become curious about his ideal world. He was wondered who is the person talking to and how did the computer knows about him. Then after he met Morpheus and chose to take the red pil to find out what is really matrix mean.

Initiation=~Morpheus bring NEo into the real world. Along the journey, Neo learned Kung Fu to fight with the agents because Enemy system(agents) wanted to kill NEO. After computer up-graded program kung fu into his brain, he went into the computer program to have a training with Morpheus.

Return=Neo Found that in the matrix world was created by human. He understand free his mind is important for him to deal with the agent and he able to reborn by erasing the bullet shoot by one of the agent. He then return back to his mother ship.

How Is The Matrix's Monomyth & Plato's Allergory of the Cave Concept are related?

The "Matrix" is a movie are showing about a human reality. I was get an idea that from the movie that was when you are in a real world it can be an illusion and you can feel it like not true or it is a dream, also when you are in dream it also can be very reality like you are in the real world then happening was so real.
There is three main parts of monomyth: Departure, Initiation & Return.

Firstly, the main character in the Matrix he was a programmer also is a people of computer (program) called Thomas Anderson or "Neo". He was curious about why the people called Morpheus are knowing what will happen to his around and he was start to find out the real meaning of Matrix. This will be the reason that lets him to find out the answer. This step will be same as the departure in monomyth.

Secondly, initiation of monomyth will be at the time that Neo was tested by Morpheus. Which is the red colour pill (bring him to find out the real answer for the matrix) and blue colour pill (go back to his world which is year 1999). The Neo was choose the red pill and start to find out the real answer from the real world. After that, Neo was taking a series of program test in the Matrix world prepared by Morpheus until he face the truth problems which is when he try to save Morpheus who captured by the Agents.

Lastly, the return part of monomyth happened when Neo realize in the matrix world all is only a program created by people, it was can change by his own. After that, he was understanding how the matrix world look like and kill the agent using his true power. At the last he was safe return to the mother ship.

Beside that, the story of The Matrix was similarity with the concept of Plato's Allegory cave which both of it showed the meaning of the reality of human. From the Matrix, the world of matrix was look so realistic to the real world. If you are not communicate (connect) with real world you wont get it to the real world. From the Plato's cave,it was telling that the prisoners inside the cave only can saw the shadow. So that they saw in the shadow in cave wasn't real thing but they still will feel it was real because they only can see the shadow but not the real thing beside the shadow, only the form you can sense it from ourself  it just can be real. In short, real is achieved when our brain feel it, sense it, our mind believed it that it's real the real thing accepted from our brain. The real will be no longer real until the real's truth was revealed and being accepted. The real is when you are believe it and it will be the real, and if your mind was telling that is not true you will not believe it even the thing is the true.

How is the Matrix fits monomyth and the Plato's allegory of the caves.

In the first stage, departure, Neo choose the red pil it is because he want to know about the meaning of the matrix. He is restless and eager to know the answer. It is same with the monomyth. Next, Morpheus is guiding and explaining the real world and do a lot of training to Neo. When he save the Morpheus's life, he realize the he had to live in the real world. This is the stage of initiation. For the return stage, Neo had decide to have the red pil but not blue pil. It is because he don't want to continue his live in the matrix with no answer. All in all, he decide to live in the real world and back to the matrix only for the mission.

The matrix is covering everyone's eyes and making them blind from the truth. So, everyone can just live in their imagination and ideal world. Same with the Plato's allegory. The men in the caves can just see the shadow and live in their imagination. They can't see the truth or they don't know what is truth. In the matrix, Neo choose the red pil to know what the matrix is. If someone who don't want to know the truth, they can just choose the blue pil and back to the dream as well as live in the matrix. The men in the cave who don't want to know and can't accept the truth, they just kill the men who know the truth. So they can back to the seat and live in the world with shadow and imagination forever.

The Matrix's Monomyth & Plato's Allergory of the Cave

The Matrix is a movie depicted the human reality is actually simulated reality created by computer programme. The monomyth by Joseph Campbell can be found in the structure of this movie. There is three main parts of monomyth: Departure, Initiation & Return.

First, the protagonist of The Matrix was a computer programmer called Thomas Anderson or 'Neo'. He is eager to find out the meaning of 'Matrix'. Hence, this will be the reason for him to step out from his world and seek for the answer. This step will be same as the departure in monomyth.

Next, the initiation of monomyth will be at the time when Neo was bring into the real world by Morpheus. During the journey, Neo was taking a series of test prepared by Morpheus until he face the truth challenge when he try to save Morpheus who captured by the Agents.

Finally, the return part of monomyth happened when true power of Neo as The One was released. He managed to erase the Agent who shot him and return to the mother ship.

Besides, the story of The Matrix was apparently same as Plato's Allergory of the cave which both of it showed the sense and the form of 'real'. In the Matrix, the world where people can taste the food was a Matrix which is not a real world and barely an illusion which accepted by human kin to live with. in contrast, Plato's cave was also telling prisoners that things they saw in the cave wasn't real, only the form from the outside of cave is real. In short, real is achieved when our mind believed that it's real due to the sustain of the real thing accepted. The real will be no longer real until the real's truth was revealed and being accepted.

How is The Matrix fits monomyth and the Plato’s allegory of the caves?

In monomyth, the first stage, departure, the hero begins his journey in an ordinary world first and receives a call to enter an unknown world of strange powers and events. Same in the Matrix, Neo is restless, eager and driven to learn the meaning of cryptic references to the "Matrix" appearing on his computer. In the second stage, initiation, Neo was trying to adapt to the ideal world since there are differences between ideal world and the real world. In the third stage, return, Neo knows that the knowledge and experiences he had gain are useful to the world so he decides to live in both worlds.

In the Matrix, within the person of the virtual world, it is a non-substantial pattern of the world, it is reflective of the real world, it is a shadow in its form. Like the prisoners in the cave, those who are prisoners in the system of matrix are held in their calm state by reason of the illusion that stimulates them and tricks them into remaining asleep or rather into being ignorant of the fact that they are prisoners in pads .

The shadows on the wall which are reflective, is to keep the prisoners on the Cave unaware of the fact that they are prisoners, that they are under bondage and have never truly seen life outside of the Cave. The shadows on the walls are by puppets .They could be seen as the agents, whom within the Matrix being programs are to maintain that the humans asleep in the matrix keeping man actively ignorant of what is truly happening, so they never wake up the puppets which are seen on the wall to keep the mind of the prisoners stimulated so they never realize that they are chained, they are blind to see broader perspectives.

In the Cave, some Light, the fire which cast the shadows of the puppets on the walls. This Light can be seen as a small aspect of the Truth. It can be said, that there is Truth beyond the illusion, as its source is the Light. In the Matrix, the difference is that people are the Light of the matrix since they created it.

The prisoner who lives in the cave, comes into the sun and their eyes are blinded by the light. The same can be seen when Neo first came out of the matrix and said “my eyes. I can't see.” In the Cave, the prisoners never used their eyes truly; they were always in the darkness where they could not see behind themselves to see what the source of the shadows was.

When said prisoner returns to the Cave his eyes have to readjust to the illusions of the cave, since it is much darker there. The same can be seen in perception when Neo first comes back into the matrix, has to come to terms with the fact that his whole life in there was lie. When this prisoner who has seen outside of the cave attempts to tell the prisoners of course no one believes him, they have never seen it before, so it relative to their experiences, from which side they see truth. In the Matrix no one would believe that they are in a computer programmed to keep them sleep.

Analysis on the Animation

The animation which had shown in the class are almost same with The Matrix. The main character do not sure where is him. He always feel the real world is not that real, while every-time he will feel it is more real when he is in his dream. Same as The Matrix, someone tell the main character about somebody are going to arrest him, the guider also guide him to run off from the agents. However, the main character is fail to run away and he fall down from the highest floor of his school. All of that had appeared in his dream. That is also appear in his real life after his dream and he is die due to falling down from the high place. However, before the end of the story he is still alive and lie on a bed with some people around him ( something like he is lie on the operation bed and the people around him are the doctors).

This movie is quite confuse because I am not sure when is the character appear in his dream and when is the character appear in the real life. In my opinion, the main character is maybe a special person who can sense on the ideal world. This make him willing to know about which is the real. Maybe his dream is guiding him to the ideal world. From that ideal world, he will know what are going to happen in his real life. He will experience two times for a case every times, one in the ideal life(dream) and another in his real life.

How is The Matrix fits to Monomyth and The Plato's Allegory of the Caves?

How is it fits to Monomyth?

Stage 1: Departure
Neo aware of the present of ideal world. A guider, Morpheus give a guide to Neo to bring him to the ideal world as he told Neo that Neo is actually  the savior of the world. Neo can actually do his decision whether he willing to go to the ideal world. He choose and eat the red pill (1st stage he need to do to go to the ideal world), he awake in a liquid fill vessel. He saw many liquid fill vessel around him, each one fill with one people with a lot of pipe plug on their body, he is also same with all of them. However, the difference is that he is awake  but the others are sleeping. Neo is after that brought to the place where the Morpheus is.

Stage 2: Initiation
Neo feel hard to breath in the ideal world and he is faint. Every members in the ideal world hel him to change the system in his body. After that, Neo is told the difference of real world and ideal world. He is engage to awake everyone in the world. Then, Neo need to learn a lot of "kung fu" which use to fight with the agent. Besides, he also need to change his mind -- everything can be possible. He had also learn other lesson after the. He had bring to visit the Oracle. The Oracle the him he is actually not the savior of the world. However, he had save Morpheus at the last (done a savior's job). He had realized on what is the purpose he want to live in the world. He is willing to share what he had experience to everyone in the world.

Stage 3: Return
Neo do not decide to return to the real world and forgot everything in the ideal world. He decide to live in both the worlds since he know the difference between both. He had finish his journey and he know that the knowledge he had gain are beneficial the the world.

How is it fits to Plato's Allegory of the Caves?

In The Matrix, everyone in the real world are consider the prisoners. They can't really see the ideal world. Everything they had seen and done are a shadow, an imagination, a system which always control them to allow the system run smoothly ( this system help them to gain energy). Neo is guided to run out of the real world. He saw everyone are sleeping and their body are pluging with a lot of pipes. He is same as others, plug by a lot of pipes but what he is different is he is awake. He had aware and learn a lot of knowledge in the ideal world. He decide to live in both the real and ideal worlds finally. He is willing to share with everyone in the real world about what he gain from the ideal world.

How is it fits to monomyth?

There are 17 stages in the monomyth. Neo have to deal with the first stage which is "the call to adventure". He was called by a man named morpheus and met him in a room. He was asked to choose whether he want to know the truth or forgot everything after he woke up.Red pills and Blue pills were given to him and he had chosen the red pills which brought him to the world of the reality.

Next, he was in "the crossing of the first threshold "'s stage. After consumed the red pills given by morpheus, he was found reborn in a machine filled with liquid-filled vessel just like the amniotic fluid in a pregnant woman's womb. His body was connected with some electrical gadgets and was brought to Morpheus's ship - Nebuchadnezzar.

After he comforted himself surviving in the real world, he had the opportunity to meet with the Oracle who knows to predict the future. This suits the stages of "the meeting with godness" and the Oracle told him that he wasn't the chosen one. However he was given "the ultimate boon" as he has the ability to adapt himself to different changing circumstances and learned various types of skills and techniques very fast. Finally, he was quite successful to return as a Saviour to fight against the matrix.

How is it fits into the plato 's allegory's caves?

In this allegory, as we know that plato describes the prisoners in the cave were unable to move his head to right or left and were chained on the wall of the cave. Behind them have a camp fire burning while the puppeteers hold puppets that cast shadows on the cave's wall. The prison only able to see the view of their front which is the shadows and the sounds from the puppets. The role of the matrix is just like the puppeteers who share the wrong informations/messages to the people. Matrix makes the people to live unconsciously in the dream world and refuse to tell the truth to them. Pity people were kept inside a drum and will never able to know the truth. Therefore Neo was given a mission to free the mind of these people that were kept in the drum. They have the rights to know what actually happened to the real world. He has to unchained the people who live in the cave(world of matrix) and let them know that everything they feel and touch are not real as they are controlled by the matrix.

matrix dani salleh 1204573

Based on the monomyth joseph campbell or the hero's journey, there are 3 stage of monomyth that is the departure, initiation and return,

Departure.
The scene is when neo was offerd two pills.. red and blue. blue is he goes back to his normal life and still be in the matrix and red if he wants to get to know the real world out side of the matrix. Neo picked the red pill and was brought to the matrix. he was unconscious and was awaken in a liquid-filled vessel that was connected to a lot of other people. after going through the metamorphosis he was made in to a semi robot that has a plug at the back of his head so that he could go in and out of the matrix.

Initiation.
at first he met the oracle and she explain how  Where Morpheus train Neo how to be in the matrix where the mind is more powerful then brutal strength. Morpheus train to jump over a building and falling, where nothing is what it seems. train him how to use martial art( a program that teach him how to fight). ect.
At first he was doing pretty bad and wanted to give up, but as time goes by he started to get use to it and he surpass even the teacher Morpheus. In the movie he was the chosen one to defeat Mr Anderson the robot virus that controls the matrix world.

Return
He defeated Mr.Anderson , he went back to the real world in the ship and base in the robot world in the future. Everyone embarrass him as a hero as he return.

Matrix cartoon.
what i like about the matrix cartoon.? hmmm the plot of the story is almost similar to the original one . its just how its told that was different. i like the animation. even tho its an animation it still has a realism attribute to it. how it moves how it fades and how it was construct. i think my favorite part is when the phone rang and he already off his phone and it still rang. You know then it was from the matrix. because there's no other explanation. am i alone? that is a classic tag line in the matix.

Plato's cave.

The story/movie of the matrix and platos cave has the similarity of the real and unreal . In the matrix, there is two world. One is in the matrix( inside the computer) and the real world which was in the future where it was conquered by the robots. Neo was stuck in the world of matrix but his conscious knew that something was not right. he knew that he wasn't in the real world or there is another world out there. from the Plato's cave, show that the prisoners in the cave can  only see the shadows that what project by the light and fire, not the real object. means they are only see what they can see and have to believe it . same like in the matrix. they only saw the world that is being shown to them, not anything else. Once the prisoner was out of the cave only can he see the real thing that was happening in the real world. to relate to the matrix. after morpheus gave him the pill and he was reborn, only then he saw what is happening in the real world.

Gladiator dani salleh 1204573

1. Is the story a hero's journey? Try to describe it as a hero's journey and see if it fits the template.

The hero, the person that goes out to do great deed, achieves something on be half of the Group, tribe or civilization. That describes the adventure of the heroes journey.

2. What did you learn about Rome from this movie? Do some research on the characters. Are they real people from history? Is the film accurate in historical detail? And architectural detail (for example, the Colosseum/ Flavian Ampitheatre)?

Based on the research that i made, not everything in the movie was accurate. People call it the worse and the best of all film .

Characters

Some of the character in the film gladiator movie was real and some were made up, and others were real but the situation of the film made the character change on how they were protrade and most of them are protrade differently.

example of the character that were real.protrade differently

  • Maximus Decimus Meridius Decimus Aelius Maximus Meridiusw is his real name but Maximus is mentioned as Maximus Decimus Meridius and later as Aelius Maximus.
  • Lucilla was murdered on her brother's orders at the beginning of his reign. There is no indication that he intended to commit incest with her.
  • Commodus' only nephew by Lucilla, if called Lucius Verus like his father, actually died young even before his uncle becoming an Emperor. Since Lucilla's husband, Lucius Verus died in 169 and Commodus became Emperor in 181, Lucilla's son by her dead husband would be at least 12 years old at the beginning of Commodus' reign and already 23 at the end in 192. The film shortens the actual reign of Commodus.
  • Lucius Verus The young son of Lucilla. He is named after his father Lucius Verus. He is also the grandson of Marcus Aurelius

  • During my research there's a few character that didn't pop . So i assume that the character were made up,

  • Antonius Proximo - The person who bought Maximus in north africa. A former gladiator himself, he was freed by Marcus Aurelius
  • Senator Gracchus - One of the senators who opposes Commodus' rule.
  • Maximus wife and son.

Architectural detail.

  • In the scene with the gladiator caravan coming into Rome, a wall that surrounds the entire city can be seen, which resembles the Aurelian Wall. The Aurelian Wall was not made until 275 A.D.
  • In the film it is stated that the Colosseum holds 50,000 people. It is now believed to have seated 73,000.
  • In the movie, the Colosseum is referred to by that name; in truth during the Roman Empire it was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_accuracy_of_Gladiator_(2000_film)

3. What was happening to the Roman empire during the period of Commodus' rule? And what eventually caused the decline and downfall of the Roman Empire?

Commodu's rule from 180 to 192 . He also ruled as co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until his father's death in 180 .There was a lot of conspiracy that was going around. and there for coaused the decline and downfall of the roman empire along the year. but some say the Roman empire never fall rather adapted. Since the Rome still exists . Many say the fall of rome was on going process and it lasted over mroe then a century long.

4. Is this film propaganda for a certain set of ideas or a way of life? Did the writer, director and actors intend for you to have the reactions that you have expressed here? Aren't you just a bit suspicious and critical of the film and the black and white division between Commodus and Maximus? Such a bad and nasty Emperor and such a loyal gladiator! One is a 'good Roman' and the other is just out for himself? Doesn't it all seem a little too simple? So, again, is this film propaganda for an idea of loyalty? To answer this, look at which country produced it and when it was produced. How is the film 'constructed' to provide a lesson to the audiences of that country of its origin? Is it really about Rome, or about the country it came from? What was happening in that country in the years just before it was created?

United State produce this flim. It didnt state when it was produce but it did state when it was released on  May 5, 2000.  why do people think that commodus is the bad one and maximus is the good one.? because that's what the director wants  you to think. during that time Kennedy was the US president and when he was detrone Gorge w.bush went up. could it be this is what they want to make people think about? because certainly this gladiator movie isn't really about rome. The US made this movie, maybe the US wants to think that US is rome? the great empire . This flim is based on propaganda as it want to influence the attitude of the community towards the flim. maybe the US wants us to believe that the emperor or the president now is a bad president and it need a new change. that is how i look at it when i saw the movie.

The scene i like the most in the gladiator movie is when Maximus realizes the truth about marcus's death and how he was betrayed by his friend. When he escape he rush to his family only to find out that the house was already burn down and his family was already killed . then he became a slave but no one knew his identity. He was bought by by proximo and was force to fight as a gladiator for his life.. at first he didnt want to but he found out who was the trator he fought to the very end until he was face to face with the fake king (forgot his name).

TEO ENG SENG 1204532

In the allegory, Plato likens people untutored in the Theory of Forms to prisoners chained in a cave, unable to turn their heads. All they can see is the wall of the cave. Behind them burns a fire.  Between the fire and the prisoners there is a parapet, along which puppeteers can walk. The puppeteers, who are behind the prisoners, hold up puppets that cast shadows on the wall of the cave. The prisoners are unable to see these puppets, the real objects, that pass behind them. What the prisoners see and hear are shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see. Plato's point is that the prisoners would be mistaken. For they would be taking the terms in their language to refer to the shadows that pass before their eyes, rather than to the real things that cast the shadows.

From the movie Gladiator (2000), the scene that i like is almost the last scene of the movie. as Commodus collapses in the now-silent Colosseum, a dying Maximus begins seeing his wife and son in the afterlife. He reaches for them, but is pulled back to reality by the Praetorian prefect Quintus, who asks for instructions. Maximus orders the release of Proximo's gladiators and Senator Gracchus, whom he reinstates and instructs to return Rome to a Senate-based government. Maximus collapses, and Lucilla rushes to his aid. After being reassured that her son is safe and Commodus is dead, Maximus dies and wanders into the afterlife to his family in the distance. Senator Gracchus and Proximo's gladiators carry his body out of the Colosseum. That night, a newly freed Juba buries Maximus' two small statues of his wife and son in the Colosseum, and says that he too will eventually join them, but not yet.I love this scene so much because the Maximus was so love his family as well and also miss his wife and son, and also he was a man brave and strong to his every war.

the scene i like the most is when Maximus went back to find his wife and his son after he won the war. He was so happy when on the way he went back, but at the moment. Commodus sent his army to kill Maximus son and wife. when he hurry to safe his wife ans son but is too late, when Maximus reached home. he saw his wife and son dead body hang on the cross and were burnt. Maximus was so sad . this scene is not a happy scene but i like this scene because this scene tell us that , as a father , no matter how far he is, he still love and miss his family member and he always tried to protect us anywhere he is.

For Gladiator this movie, the scene i like the most is the first scene when Maximus delivers a fantastic fight in the forest.Every sway of him brings death.I like the way he leads his Roman army to defeat the Barbarian tribes in Germenia. Before going to the battle, he says:"Strength and Honor," and then gets on his horse and addresses Quintus to unleash the arrow after his signal .From this three words, it gives me such a powerful motivation to win for the war if I were one of them. After that, he is also trying to convince his "brothers" before they launch the attack by saying "What we do in life, echoes in eternity".This quotes also makes me feels like in a sure win mood and will risk my own life to fight against the Barbarian. It is important to be encouraged by leader especially when there are a need to cooperate in a form of group and produce a positive result.

From the movie Gladiator (2000), the scene that I like is almost the last scene of the movie, during the fight of Commodus with Maximus in the arena. Maximus manages to disarm Commodus, while General Quintus disobey the emperor's demand for his sword and also commands his soldiers to do the same. Although General Quintus has betrayed Maximus before, but Quintus shows the fairness in this situation, he does not give Commodus his sword. Commodus uses his hidden stiletto, but Maximus plunges the blade into Commodus' throat and kills him. This would be a good ending for this movie, but unfortunately Maximus has been stabbed by Commodus with a stiletto before they enter the arena.

Although this is the scene that Maximus died but lastly he has carried out Emperor Marcus' wishes, return power to the Roman Senate. For Maximus, completing mission yet no regret is the most important wish for a warrior.

This is the scene the most I like

When the Caesar become the king, the leader of the kingdom, The populace are angry with him and not ever respect him. In that not democratic century, they can’t say anything or take any action to overturn him.

I like this scene because that is showing that a leader who do not respect others decision, do not accept others instruct, be full of cunning tricks, and do not be honest, loyal will not be respected and supported by others.

The movie Gladiator(2000), directed by Ridley Scott depicted the life of Maximus Decimus Meridius from a general of 5000 soldiers to a slave and became gladiator who stand to fight and slayed the tyrant-Commodus. In this movie, the scene that I like the most is the time when Maximus return to his wife and son in the after world after he completed his final task and vengeance- slayed the tyrant Commodus. Maximus is the toughest guy ever!

I like this scene because the dream for Maximus is to go home after war and live a simple life with his wife and son. His son and wife is everything for him. It's crucial moment when his wife and son were burnt and nailed to the cross. Maximus had been lived in a miserable life and he managed to free himself at last. Although this scene is not happened in reality but I feel relieved when I saw Maximus gather with his family after years of struggling. It's kinda relax and a good ending for him perhaps. Finally, it's the end of sorrow.

Chew Jue Ann 1003571

The movie Gladiator (2000), is my first time ever to watch this kind of movie. (Maximus), he is a simple man live with a normal life with her wife and a son in a so called village. He did not desire any luxury things but all he wanted was live a normal, simple and humble life. He realize although his job acquire him to kill innocent people but still he did not feel proud nor happy after the winning of the war.

The scene that I like was, when he (Maximus) is being picked by a random seller/collectors/ officers that those mans whom are being collect or picked up by them will be sent to the huge stage that faced millions of audience to fight unknown fighters. During on his journey to another state, he sudden think about his wife and his son. The memories he had with them, is the most beautiful scene where indicates that he appreciate what he have, his family and his life. In life we have to appreciate every single things, loves one,and even strangers because when they are gone or when recall back the memories, we will have no feeling of regrets. That will lead to a succeed life, whenever we faced later on. The feeling of no regrets , is the one of the key in our life.

Tan Xiao Han 1102883

For the gladiator (2000), the scene I like is the first time which Maximus known as "Maximus the Merciful" by the audiences. That scene shows in the second time for Maximus fight in the Colosseum in Rome. For that time, Maximus fight with Tigris of Gaul, Rome's only undefeated gladiator. Both of them are surrounded by  4 tigers which are under controlled  with chains, these tigers are used to target Maximus only. After an intense fighting, Maximus narrowly defeat Tigris and wait for Caesars to decide whether kill or spare Tigris. Caesars votes for kill Tigris. However, Maximus refuse to kill him and that action make the audiences known him as "Maximus the Merciful". He become more famous while the popularity of Caesars decline.

I like this scene because the life of Tigris is saved although the king vote to kill him. Life should be appreciated. When we appreciated the life, the world will become peaceful, hatred will be decrease. Besides that, the action of Maximus had change the opinion of audiences also. The audiences whom vote to kill Tigris at the beginning had change their view and support the action of Maximus. Everyone is support peaceful in that scene and it shows unity.
